For five centuries, a witch’s curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the mountain. When Cécile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she realises that the trolls are relying on her to break the curse.

Cécile has only one thing on her mind: escape. But the trolls are clever, fast, and inhumanly strong. She will have to bide her time…

But the more time she spends with the trolls, the more she understands their plight. There is a rebellion brewing. And she just might be the one the trolls were looking for...

Stolen Songbird is a fantastic debut novel that is a wonderful edition to the fantasy world. Filled with adventure, romance and outlandish creature, Danielle L. Jensen turns the tables on fairytale cliché, leaving you wanting more. – Abooktopia
A young woman named Cécile is kidnapped from her life and sold to the trolls where she is forced to marry the troll prince in order to break a centuries-old curse that was brought upon the troll kingdom by a witch that seals them within their subterranean mountain. A prophecy claims that a human woman with red hair and the voice of an angel will be the one to break the curse, and free the trolls. However, Cécile must learn to adapt to their world as best she can, but the longer she lives without breaking the curse, the more expendable she becomes to the, for what use is she to the trolls if she cannot do the one thing she was bought down to do? But that’s not the only problem. A revolution is brewing beneath the exterior of the kingdom, and Cécile is about to get caught up in the middle of it all.

The overall story, introduced a different idea about trolls, and paints them in a new light. The world building for this novel was incredible, and destroyed all myths of your stereotypical troll. If you believe all trolls to ugly and stupid, it’s best to ride of those past thoughts for you are most mistaken. Their beautiful faces and twinkly grey eyes easily seduce you, catching one off guard. But no one ever anticipates beautiful exteriors to hide something so twisted and sadistic on the inside. With their cunning, and calculated ruthlessness, the trolls can predict your next move.

The plot was interesting and complex, but managed to flow nicely in a good pace filled with mystery, adventure, and action, to create an amazing storyline. I adored how Cécile, the heroine, was not whinny, but rather a capable and fierce character that was realistic. She had her little faults and imperfections, as we humans do, which made her easier to connect with. It was so easy to be pulled into the world of Trollus, and just has hard to be pulled away from its depth.

Danielle L. Jensen is the USA Today bestselling author of the acclaimed Malediction Trilogy: Stolen Songbird, Hidden Huntress, and Warrior Witch (Angry Robot Books).

Danielle was born and raised in Calgary, Canada. At the insistence of the left side of her brain, she graduated in 2003 from the University of Calgary with a bachelor’s degree in finance. But the right side of her brain has ever been mutinous; and in 2010, it sent her back to school to complete an entirely impractical English literature degree at Mount Royal University and to pursue publication. Much to her satisfaction, the right side shows no sign of relinquishing its domination.

The Malediction Trilogy by Danielle L. Jensen:
BOOK 1: Stolen Songbird
BOOK 2: Hidden Huntress
BOOK 3: Warrior Witch

It truly is shame that some well-written novels are not getting the hype they deserve

I swear movie book adaptions get all the hype and half the time they're not even that great and they lack complexity and engaging plot :(

I find that directors do tend to prefer to adapt simpler novels as they are easier to create as it is less stressful for them to keep it true to the series, and they can add in some extra bits and get rid of other scenes that won't effect the change of plot in the series.

I actually never realized that until now. I mean TMI is fairly complex and look at how badly they stuffed that up, but TFIOS was done well because there wasn't much that happened in the novel and it was just easier to turn into a film

They always seem to ruin the complex novels, yet it's always the complex novels that we want to see come alive on the big screen.

That it does, and is quite true about what we wish to be adapted

It's a nice chance to have someone different to your typical vampire, werewolves, and faeries.

I swear everyone is just sick of vampires now and there are so many books about Faeries that are coming out I swear. There used to never be so many 😱

That they are unfortunately but I guess that's because they reached their hyped up peak and what goes up must come down. I never knew there were so many faerie books until last year when I read a bunch of them and found that they all had similar concepts.

Over hyped things tend to end badly sometimes such as Twilight for example. Everyone loved it, and now everyone hates it. Like what's up with that?? And yeah they has been quite a few faerie novels but I ain't complaining yet XD

It's so sad how negatively people's views on Twilight turned out after being so positive.

Ahahaha same here. I especially adore the books by Sarah J. Maas.

Welp that's awkward with my comment. Sorry for the double up cause my laptop froze the first time round and then it wouldn't allow me post my comment again cause it was a duplicate so I changed it up a bit because I was confused. Now I get it.. lel

OMG YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE. Ever since Frozen I think of trolls as cute lil rocks and not big ugly creatures that live under the bridge hoping to gobble up goats

And for this cover I'm thinking a magician version of Beautiful and the Beast mixed in with Sleeping Beauty. Not trolls, as I stated previously in your other review for the Hidden Huntress

That was exactly what I had believed when I first read it since I never really read the blub once I start a book, as it's nice to find out what the book is about whilst reading on as it can be full of surprise. But I do usually read the blurb of the book before I put on my TBR list on Goodreads

I always tend to forget the blurb as soon as a start a book, but ya it does make it more interesting and more of a surprise of what happens as the blurb can give off hints

It's a terrible habit of mine too, but I can't help it. Ooops... But it does make it more interesting in a sense which is nice.
