Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

Shadow and Bone takes place in the once-great nation of Ravka, torn in two by the Shadow Fold: a vast void filled with darkness created by the Black Heretic in the result of his greed for power.

The Grisha are the magical elite of Ravka, also known as the Soldiers of the Second Army. They practice the Small Science: they manipulate matter at its most fundamental levels.

The main characters Alina and Mal grew up as orphans at an estate owned by a kind duke. They were sent away to serve their country in the First Army after neither showed aptitude as a Grisha. Mal served as an accomplished tracker whilst Alina studied the maps of a cartographer. Their lives change drastically when their regiment is attacked on the Fold, with Mal injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves both their lives that she never knew she possessed – a power that could possibly be the key to setting Ravka, a war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is forced to learn the way of the Grisha in order to save her country and the people she loves.

Leigh Burdugo’s series The Grisha is a memorising, phenomenal piece of art. She cunningly weaves a captivating new world that is unpredictable and distinctive. Giving you no other choice, but to beg and plead for more! You have to forcibly amputate yourself from its alluring pages, and every second you are separated from your love; your soul and mind delves into the world of Ravka, imagining of all the possible outcomes and scenarios that could happen in the next page you discover. This book is a must read! After all it’s like The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter meets Twilight meets Lord of The Rings meets Game Of Thrones; basically an epic magical fantasy but completely for grown-ups.

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

I quite enjoyed the simplicity of this book. Each book told of a different story from someone else's point of view, yet in the end they are all connected together and brought together the story through different perspectives. The main moral of the story explains how our lives and the way we live can sometimes be the outcome of how some misguided leaders think problems in the world should be solved or eliminated, though there is no such thing as a perfect world, and even if there was, it wouldn’t necessarily make us any happier. Those misguided leaders who try to control and change the world mostly end up causing more problems that we need to fight against to protect the meaning of our lives. Evil is always lurking near by and can only be overcome through happiness, which is accomplished when we help and support one another, and use our gifts to make the world a better place.
