Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan's most feared assassin. As part of the Assassin's Guild, her allegiance is to her master, Arobynn Hamel, yet Celaena listens to no one and trusts only her fellow killer-for-hire, Sam. In these action-packed novellas - together in one edition for the first time - Celaena embarks on five daring missions. They take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, where she fights to liberate slaves and seeks to avenge the tyrannous. But she is acting against Arobynn's orders and could suffer an unimaginable punishment for such treachery. Will Celaena ever be truly free? Explore the dark underworld of this kick-ass heroine to find out.

I absolutely loved these short five novellas as they provided you the background story and events that lead up to Celaena being sent to Endovier and why she was known as Adarlan’s greatest assassin. I highly suggest reading this prequel before delving into Glass of Thrones. I really liked that the five novels were in chronological order, making it easy to read and purely enjoyable. The characters were well developed, with an intriguing plot and backstory.

The Pirate Lord

Celaena Sardothien and her accomplice Sam Cortland are sent on a job to collect a ‘debt’ from the Pirate King, only to find out they are actually there for a slave trade business. Enrage at being tricked, Celaena acts upon her feelings. It was really interesting to see the impacts of her actions, and the aftereffects.

The Healer

I would have to say, that this was my least favourable novel out of the five. The story didn’t appear to be of importance, but I suspect the new character Yrene will make an appearance in one of the later novels. This story takes place during the time Celaena was traveling to the deserts to work with the Silent Assassins, and happened to save a barmaid (named Yrene who wishes to become a healer one day) from an ambush. Afterwards, Celaena teaches the girl some basic self-defense moves and then leaves behinds a small fortune that will allow the healer to reach for her dreams.

The Desert

Out of all the novellas, The Desert had to be the most action-packed of them all. Celaena is sent away to a desert to train with the Silent Assassins as her punishment for the consequence of what she did in The Pirate Lord. She must learn their ways and return with the Mute Master’s letter of approval. I loved the secrets and betrayal in this novel, showing that for some, revenge can sometimes become greater than anything else.

The Underworld

The purpose of The Underworld was to build-up Celaena and Sam’s budding romance. Their relationship drastically began to change after the effects of The Pirate Lord from their hateful relationship into something bigger, that they could no longer deny.

The Empire

I saw it coming, but still… The Empire was an interesting and heartbreaking read. As for the traitor who was involved in the trap… I hope Celaena gives you a very slow and merciless death.

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

After reading Bitter Sweet Love as the introduction to The Dark Elements, I just knew that White Hot Kiss and Stone Cold Touch would make it onto my favourites shelf. Words cannot express how much I loved this series. The premise was once again unique, but this time it had gargoyles (Wardens) instead of aliens (Luxen and Arum). This is the type of book that you can read in one sitting as the plot is gripping and captivating. Do not start this book at night, as you will continue to read until your eyes drop out of your head. Trust me, they really sting the next morning.

Layla is half-gargoyle (Warden), half-demon. She was taken into a Warden’s family when she was just a little girl, and grew up there ever since. Abbott the leader of the Warden clan is the closest thing to a father figure that Layla has ever known. I really didn’t like his character as I found him much too demanding and strict. I found that he doesn’t treat Layla as his own daughter as he constantly reminds her of what she is, and what she can do with one simple fatal soul-eating kiss.  She is bought up to fear her demon half and to reject it. Helping to hunt down the demons, she tags them with a single touch lighting them up for any Warden to find like a Christmas tree. That is, until they start hunting her down and she finds out that Abbott and some of the other Wardens are hiding dark secrets from her. Untrusting to turn to the ones she called family, she confronts to her newfound friendship with the Demon Prince: Roth.

First off, Roth completely owned this book! I fell in love with his character instantly. His sometimes-awkward social behaviours were hilarious and enjoyable to read, as were his snarky comments. After all, Jennifer L. Armentrout had based his character upon Daemon Black from her other series: Lux. He takes no time in showing Layla the other side of things as he tells her the truth. As Roth teaches Layla more and more about herself and her abilities, he slowly changes alongside with her, revealing a different, kinder side of him that is overly protective and unlike that of a demon.

As for Layla’s best friend Zayne, I wasn’t sure how I felt about him. He was just ‘another’ character who was there. But as I continued onto Stone Cold Touch, Zayne’s character became a lot more developed, and couldn’t help falling in love with him. (Especially at the end!) Zayne clearly cares about Layla a lot and is willing to go out of harms way to protect her though he wasn’t always easy to like.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what happens in the final novella Every Last Breath and whom Layla will choose.

Are you Team Roth or Team Zayne? I haven’t fully decided whose side I’m on. You could say I’m sitting on the fence being Team Bambi while I decide.
